If you’ve been following the latest news in grilling, you might have heard about the Sears & Roebuck class action settlement involving a specific series of Kenmore Gas Grills. According to the suit, these grills had defective firebox trays that seemed to fail and rust prematurely. With Kenmore making theses right for their customers, here at BBQ Island, we pondered whether or not this ‘defect’ could be due to improper use and maintenance. So, we put together this list of the most common gas grilling mistakes that even some pros can make.

1. Cooking with a Dirty Grill

It’s tempting to let your dirty grill sit until the next backyard cookout. However, doing so regularly could cause its early demise. Leaving food stuck on grates and firebox trays filled with juices from your meal could both attract pesky critters and the formation of rust. Take time to clean your gas grill once it has cooled, so you’re ready to go for your next grilling section. If you’re in Arizona, we recommend doing a deep clean on your grill right before Monsoon season hits so the acidic food particles don’t damage the stainless steel.

2. Failure to Preheat the Grill

Many grilling enthusiasts mistakenly believe that using gas instead of smokers or charcoal means that they can skip the preheating process without repercussions. However, you’ll experience less sticking and get those desirable grill marks on your foods if you close the lid for at least 15 minutes after firing it up before adding your goodies.

3. Improper ‘Zoning’ When Grilling

One of the best features of gas grills is having the ability to control the heat quickly with frontal dials. It’s easy to crank the heat up too much with a gas grill. So, we recommend creating zones—one on higher heat for searing, and one on a cooler level—to properly cook meats and vegetables without burning them.

4. ‘Peeking’ Too Much
